CONNECTION HELP

Set up your phone microphone.

Phone browsers need a secure connection before they can use a microphone. Why HTTPS is required.

Using an HTTPS website

Connect everyone to the same Wi-Fi or hotspot. Open Mic and Speaker, copy the phone link and open it on your phone. Open speaker links 1, 2 and 3 on separate laptops. Tap Enable speaker on each laptop. On the phone, tap Turn microphone on and allow access. The hosted website needs internet to load and connect the room.

Using a local hotspot without internet

Run CineWall on one laptop with a TLS certificate trusted by your phone and laptops. You can prepare this before going offline. A plain http://192.168.… link cannot access the phone microphone. Bypassing a certificate warning may still block it.

  1. Find the laptop’s hotspot/Wi-Fi IPv4 address. Connect the phone and other laptops to that same network.
  2. Create a certificate for that address with your preferred local certificate tool, such as mkcert. If using mkcert, an example for 192.168.137.1 is below; replace it with your laptop’s actual address.
mkcert -install
mkcert -cert-file cinema-cert.pem -key-file cinema-key.pem localhost 127.0.0.1 192.168.137.1

Install the local CA certificate on the phone and receiver laptops so they trust it. With mkcert, find rootCA.pem in the folder shown by mkcert -CAROOT. On iOS, install the certificate profile and enable full trust. Android certificate settings vary by device; use the CA certificate installation option and check that your browser trusts the address. Only transfer the CA certificate; keep all private keys on the server laptop.

In PowerShell, from the CineWall folder, start with your certificate paths:

$env:CINEWALL_TLS_CERT = (Resolve-Path .\cinema-cert.pem).Path
$env:CINEWALL_TLS_KEY = (Resolve-Path .\cinema-key.pem).Path
node server.js

Open the printed https:// address. In Mic and Speaker, select the address reachable over the hotspot before copying links. Keep the server window open and allow its port on your private network if your firewall asks. Update the certificate and links if the laptop’s IP address changes.

Getting clear sound

Enable each laptop speaker once. Keep devices awake, start with low speaker volume and keep your phone away from the speakers to reduce feedback. Use the microphone boost and laptop volume controls gradually. Wi-Fi and browser buffering introduce some delay; this is not a sample-synchronized PA system.

Phone audio and recordings

Choose an audio file in the phone panel to send it to the laptops. The page cannot capture audio from arbitrary other phone apps or calls. Record voice records only the microphone, including its boost, and works even with broadcast muted. After stopping, preview, download or delete the take. Recordings and scripts stay in that browser’s local storage; clearing site data removes them. Download recordings you want to keep.
